Northampton

Spencer Perceval
Spencer Perceval, 1762-1812, Prime Minister 1809-1812
The Christian Peoples Alliance formed a Northampton branch in September 2005. CPA Northampton, as well as helping our London friends to fight their local elections in May 2006, also fought the Spencer Ward by-election in Northampton on 9 Feb 2006. Unlike the Londoners, though, we came last! (Oh well.)
Crick Memorial
At last, some modern art with real meaning! The DNA statue in Abington Street.
Whilst this page is supposed to be about politics, I can't resist sneaking in a quick reference to the fact that Francis Crick (the DNA chap) was a Northampton lad. And we've just been graced with a superb statue in Abington Street to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the discovery of DNA's double-helix structure.
Charles Bradlaugh
Charles Bradlaugh, 1833-1891
In political terms, Northampton's most notable figures of the last couple of centuries are Spencer Perceval, Prime Minister from 1809 until his assassination in 1812, and Charles Bradlaugh, noted freethinker and Member of Parliament for Northampton. Whilst it is true that Mr Bradlaugh was no Christian, his courage and determination are undoubted, and his fight for religious freedom (and particularly the freedom for non-Christians to take a full part in politics) is to be admired.
