" Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy." - Proverbs 31:8-9

"Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above" - John 19:11

"When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn" - Proverbs 29:2

Newham

The London Borough of Newham is north of the River Thames, and a few miles east of the centre of London. It is home to West Ham United FC, one of the most influential teams in the history of football. You can get there via the Jubilee Line or the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). Canary Wharf is a stone's throw away (if you have sufficiently powerful stone-throwing equipment). If you're not careful, you can see the Millennium Disasterdome as you travel to Newham on the DLR. In 2012, Newham will be hosting the Olympic Games.

Newham is where the CPA is currently strongest, with three local councillors. Alan Craig was the first, elected to represent Canning Town South in 2002 (the first non-Labour councillor in Canning Town South for a century!). In 2006, the people of Canning Town South showed their appreciation of Alan's hard work on their behalf (in the four years from his election in 2002 he has helped over 800 people to resolve their Council-related problems), by re-electing him, along with two other CPA members, Denise Stafford and Simeon Ademolake.

CPA Campaign Team

Part of CPA's campaign team for Newham 2006. Left to right: David, Sydney, Reg, Stuart, Benny, Lisa, Cllr Simeon Ademolake, Cllr Denise Stafford, Beatrice, Timothy, Sally, Cllr Alan Craig, Tony, and campaign manager Peter Vickers. Peter's experience was invaluable during the campaign. Unfortunately, he collapsed during the count, and was taken to hospital. (He's fine now.) I guess this is the political equivalent of bravely stretching to hammer the ball into the back of the net in the last seconds of the Cup Final, and breaking your leg heroically in the process!

Newham's May 2006 election was notable for the surprising Labour turn-out, given their apparent indifference to campaigning. It should perhaps be noted that at least one of the Respect Party's count agents (people authorised to observe the counting of votes) was utterly convinced that he had hard evidence of electoral fraud. It is certainly true that the results surprised not just the CPA, but also Respect and the Conservative Party.

CPA Councillors

Cllr Alan Craig thanks CPA supporters for their hard work during the campaign. To his left are Cllr Simeon Ademolake and Cllr Denise Stafford (just collecting her official brown envelope at the back there). Behind him to his right, you can just make out the Returning Officer (dark suit). I don't know who the other chap is.

The election was yet another indication that the "first past the post" system does not necessarily return an administration that reflects the views of the population. To demonstrate this, it is only necessary to show how the votes were cast, and how the seats were allocated. In the following chart, Labour is shown in red, Respect in dark green, Tory in blue, and the Christian Peoples Alliance in royal purple. The other shades represent minor parties such as the Greens and the Liberal Democrats.

votes chart

And here we can see the dividing up of council seats:

seats chart
Three for the CPA, three for Respect, and no fewer than 54 for Labour. That's 90% of the seats, with less than 50% of the vote. If the seats had been allocated in proportion to the support each party received in the ballot box, Labour would have won only around 29 seats. The CPA would have had 4, Respect 16, the Tories about 9, and the Greens and Lib-Dems one apiece.
